JFK ROTARY RUN

Aug 2013
As you know, there are about 34,000 Rotary Clubs throughout the world.
… And there may be that many unique ways to promote the Clubs and raise money.
Our major fundraisers are selling hot dogs and running a golf outing… By the way, don’t forget the next event, to honor Tom Digby, on Sept 11, 2013
However, one of the most interesting and different projects is conducted by the JFK Airport Rotary Club. This Club meets every other Wednesday at the Port Authority Conference Room at the Airport.
Each Spring, since 1972, the Club has run a 5K race. …. I know, this doesn’t sound that unique.
HOWEVER, this race is conducted on the runways of the airport.
The last one was this past April when they had over 1,000 runners. They actually close down a portion of the airport to conduct the race.
Runners are spared the security checks by riding special buses that go direct to the, now, deserted runway.
It’s a strange run. There are no spectators, no trees or grass. …. Only the sounds of airplanes, on other runways continuing their normal activities.
Participants include a wide range of people from the Club and the general metro area. It also attracts flyers who are in the area.
The Club has raised more than $300,000 since the first race 40 years ago.
The winner, this year, was Geoffrey Patcher 28 who works for the State Department, in Washington, and was headed back to DC
While he finished the race in a respectful 28 minutes and 38 seconds, his “real” race then just began.
…. Since his flight home was scheduled to depart from Laguardia Airport.
