MONUMENT IN NEWTON GREEN

We had a speaker on June 3, 1981 who discussed the Monument in Newton Green.

It was dedicated Sept. 5, 1895 and paid for by The  Sussex Cty Board of Freeholders. The cost was $6,000

It is 33’ high.

The Soldier on top is 8’ tall and weighs 800 lbs.

Dedication day was a big event. Activities included a major parade, fireworks and a feast for 1,000 people at the Presbyterian Church.

It was reported that only 2 fights broke out and no more than 6 drunks were arrested.

The soldier, however, should have been on a horse since the battles mentioned, on the monument, were cavalry campaigns. However, construction was too expensive and the rifleman was substituted.

The monument text reads:

Erected by a grateful people to commemorate the services
and sacrifices of the soldiers and sailors in the War of the Rebellion

Defenders of the Union
1861-1865
