HARRY JONES  President 1952-53

Harry was one of our most memorable members. I have been interested in him for about a year. In fact, I have asked several members about his background, however, no one seems to know much about him.

Recently, I found a tidbit about him, in our archives, and was then able to construct a beginning  history.

He originally joined Rotary, in the Brooklyn club, in 1918. He was then President of the Grand Union Tea Co. This is the precursor of the Grand Union Supermarket chain. The firm was originally established, in 1872, in Scranton.

In 1912 they had 200 stores across the country. By 1928 they acquired several other chains and reincorporated under the Grand Union name. They had 708 stores by 1931. You may remember that all stores were sold and the chain was dissolved in 2001.

He joined our Club in 1940 and held several positions.

He became an extraordinary supporter of the community and Rotary. He and his wife were also very enthusiastic supporters of the Rotary Foundation and were cited, nationally, as major supporters. In fact, as of 1965 he was listed as a “Super Donor”. I was able to document 3 large gifts totaling $20,000, but there may be more.

He resided in Middleville where he had a custom organ installed in his house. This was later donated to the Christ Episcopal Church, Newton, in 1959.

His house, by the way, was purchased by Don Coslow.  The original property, consisting of 80 acres, was purchased in 1939.

Among other gifts to the community was  $40,000 towards construction of the Newton Municipal pool, dedicated in 1960.

I’ve heard from one of our long standing members that he also was one of the most cordial people you have ever met.” He generally sent out “thank you” notes after receiving a “thank you” note from you about something.”

Harry and his wife, Charlotte, were also excellent golfers. The NY Times reported, in 1937, that he won the men’s tournament and she won the women’s at the Ormond Beach Florida Golf Club.
