LEWIS P DOLAN JR

12/4/13

As you may know, we have had three (3) Dolans in our club over the years as President. William (1927/28) who was also a charter member; Lewis Sr (1929/30)  and Lewis Jr (1976/77).   I know… it’s confusing.

Wiliam, the charter member, was born in 1883 in Ogdensburg. He was admitted to the bar in 1904. His early positions included the legal dept at AT&T and an asst. attorney general.  He was, later,  appointed a  prosecutor by Governor Wilson, right before he was elected President, in 1912. …that’s President Wilson

He began a local law firm with Lewis Sr in 1922. Lewis Sr became the 7th president of this club in 1929. That firm is Dolan & Dolan .

That leads us to Lewis P Dolan Jr who was born in 1927, in Newton. Therefore, he was about 2 years old when his father, became president of this Club.

He attended Newton High and Lawrenceville Prep School. He received his BA from Dartmouth and his law degree from The University of Virginia.

He began practicing law at his father’s firm in 1954 and joined our Rotary Club shortly after that. His wife is the former Joan Yetter and they had 4 children.

He died in December 1987 at the age of 60. He was an active Rotarian who helped found the Newton Rotary Golf Outing…  He was president of the Club in 1976-77 and active in several other local clubs.

One of his children, Michael, still resides locally, in Frankfort.

He claimed a golf score of 87 and enjoyed the piano…. And was a cousin of Bob Morgenstern….. and thank you to Bob for helping me with some of the details.
