Last Week, Wednesday, October 23, 2019
On this date in Newton Rotary history, Pres-elect Jim Taylor performed the role of Pres. Carolyn by opening the meeting and leading us in the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Alden once again led us in our prayer and songstress of the day, Barbara Miller, led us in song. The chorus followed sotto voce.
Our program last week was in-service. Many of the items covered are noted in the Announcements/Happenings section of the newsletter. Highlighting in-service was Jim Porter's presentation of the Gift of Life. Jim and Pres. Carolyn attended the recent Gift of Life Gala. Jim noted that Newton Rotary will partner with Sri Lanka in a project to bring cardiac surgeries to countless children in Sri Lanka. Jim shared a brief history of The Gift of Life, its evolution and its future. Jim has many, many Gift of Life raffle tickets – grand prize: a trip to the Superbowl.
Guests
Only us, who were warmly welcomed by Denise.
Announcements/Happenings
• A thank you for all who donated shampoo and conditioner for our homeless project. This week – body wash and deodorant!
• Dawn Hall announced that her wine bag for the Farm & Table event has but a few bottles. They are lonely and would welcome a few siblings into the fold. If you wish to donate a bottle, please bring it to our meeting on October 30 as the Farm to Table event is Saturday, November 2.
• Please sign up for Newton Rotary's day at Manna House, October 31, 2019 (10 am to 2 pm). Please contact Barbara Miller if you can help. Barbara noted that a shift is eight workers; currently one more volunteer is needed.
• Perhaps for the first time ever, there were no birthdays or anniversaries in the month.
• Denise could use help in setting up for the Farm to Table evening. Set up is scheduled for the morning of November 2. Please let Denise know if you can assist.
• A reporter is needed for the December 11 meeting. Please see Carolyn if you can scribe on this date.
• Dawn informed us that the Chili Open will be held the weekend prior to the Superbowl. More on this later.
• Kurt Walton directed a video performance of “The Dictionary Project.” Matt Hannum, Laura Camp and Tom Digby were seen in cameo roles. Newton Rotarians show “gratitude” and are “happy” that they have been given the opportunity to “volunteer” and be a part of the Dictionary Project this year. Note: This sentence will make sense, hopefully, only to those who attended our October 23 meeting.
• Reminder: Barbara requested that all gifts, gift certificates, items for the Farm to Table Silent Auction be brought to the October 30 meeting as The Farm to Table Silent Auction is Saturday, November 2.
Happy Dollars
A happy meeting it was. (Thankfully, not as happy as when Bud Luthman was editor.) The editor hopes everyone's happiness was captured and recorded. If the editor missed someone's definition of happiness, please remember “forgetful listening” surfaces at the age of he who is recording notes this day.
• Alden Welch was happy for the Gala and that Bristol Glen will again host our trilogy of music in December.
• Kurt Walton was happy for Team Newton's performance in the District Golf Outing.
• Denise Current was happy for Bob Shankman's donation to the Homeless Project. Bob mailed his donation to Denise since circumstances have precluded him from attending recent meetings. Denise was also happy for her visit with Paul Cummins.
• Dawn Hall gave a happy dollar for The Dictionary Project at Hampton.
• Tom Digby was happy for the chat he had with prospective member Katie Hannan.
• Barbara Miller was happy for her two sunny weeks in Florida.
50/50
Dawn Hall drew the bountiful card ($6). The Ace escapes for yet another week. It's “numbered” though.
HALLOWEEN RIDDLE
Q “Why did the ghost not go to the Halloween Party?
A “He had no Body to go with.”
Get It??? And with that, it's a wrap!
