This Week, September 2, 2015
Keith Flinn and Bruce Tomlinson of the NJ Herald will be our guest speakers.
Last Week, August 26, 2015
Pres. Jerry led us in the Pledge of Alligance. Steve McNally noted he was entering “new territory” and led us in a timely prayer. Mark Hontz led us in a rousing rendition of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” amplified by a choral verve of unparalleled notes!
Charles offered a glowing introduction of newly retired Newton High School principal, Jim Tasker. Jim shared with the Club some historical perspectives and accomplishments of Newton High School; e.g. the high achievement level of the school in international testing. Jim, then, rendered a “State of the State” of New Jersey education, emphasizing the importance and place of technology (and its inherent cost) in education today as well as the quantum increase in “red tape” aka, regulations.
Guests
- Clarissa, Denise Current's granddaughter
- Jerry Hanifan -- his last time as a guest
- # 50, 54, 59 – guests of John Roberts – each of whom worked multiple shifts at the Fair
- Jim Taylor welcomed our guests on this date.
Antiquity/Tradition/History
Mike Hanifan presented the original Newton Rotary placard which hung in the Cochran House. It was a nostalgic moment. Mike purchased the sign (some 60 years old) at an antique shop. How impressive! An artifact of Newton Rotary history.
Induction of Member
Jerry Hanifan was inducted as the newest member of Newton Rotary. Mike Hanifan introduced his father in a neatly entertaining fashion. Carl Lazzaro presided as the Past President. Carl assumed the role with aplomb, highlighting the origins of Rotary, sharing his insights into Rotary and describing what it means to be a Rotarian. Carl cited a corollary of “Service Above Self” – “What you put into Rotary, you get out of Rotary.” Congratulations and welcome, Jerry.
Photo Fines
Only one today – Sherm Tomasino was photographically captured in his capacity as a SCFHS official.
Announcements
Charles, dressed appropriately in sartorial splendor of the golfing world, reminiscent of Bob Jones, Ben Hogan, et.al., spoke eloquently about the upcoming Golf Outing, September 9, honoring Carl and Pam Lazzaro. Charles also noted that all golfers are welcome (and needed).
Dates to Note:
September 13 – Walk fest, Waterloo Village
October 7 – A change of venue – the weekly meeting will be held at Sheridan's Lodge
October 23 – Presidents' Ball – Mayfair Manor. See Jerry if you plan on attending
November 4 – Happy Hour Social, 4 – 6 at Sheridan's Lodge.
Happy Dollars
Happiness abounded!
- John Cuozzo was happy that he survived music lessons with his nephew.
- Denise Current was happy that her granddaughter, Clarissa, accompanied her to Rotary.
- Bud Luthman was happy for all of Jim Tasker's efforts and accomplishments and for his long standing ties with Newton Rotary.
- Alden Welsh was happy for Jim Tasker's involvement with the Jackson Scholarship. Alden shared a brief overview of the scholarship and the good it has brought to its many recipients.
- John Frank was happy that Frank Eberhart noted that he will be returning from North Carolina next week. John asked that the Club proclaim next Wednesday as “Be Kind to Frank Day,” after which it's back to normal.
- John Frank was happy for the number of Newton Rotarians who have been inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame; namely, Bud Luthman, John Frank (yes, the Selection Committee did upon occasion render questionable decisions), Bill Gray, Jack Hontz, John Iliff, Judge Weber, Sandy Hollander, George Morville, Norma Cappola and, in memoriam, Bill Cox and Carlton Sprague. Editor's Note: If anyone's name was not cited above, please let John Frank know and the name will appear in a future newsletter.
- Buz Tomasino was happy for his recent trip to Margate, NJ.
- Dottie Budd was happy to announce the birth of their great granddaughter; Dewey delivered the happy dollar.
- Mark gave a happy dollar for his son who is now “behind the wheel.”
- John Roberts gave five happy dollars for the five members of his team who volunteered for numerous shifts at the Fair. Carl also thanked John and the young men for their fantastic efforts.
- It might be noted that his week's editor, who is coming to terms with the process of aging, may have missed or not “heard” the announcement of a happy dollar. If any were missed – an editorial apology.
50/50
Buz Tomasino won the 50/50 but left the $403 pot for another person. Remember: “You 'gotta' be in it to win it.” Only 20 cards remain!
