Happy Dollars:

Carl is happy that “nobody cares that Clemson won”.
Jim Taylor on the contrary stated he is very happy that Clemson won.  The game referenced was the college football national championship against Alabama who some report was a blowout 44-16 victory at Santa Clara on January 7, 2019.

Charles is ever so happy to report that his daughter is engaged! Another wedding is being planned.  Congratulations Charles!
Dewey is happy that January 9 was his birthday and he is 92 years young.  Dewey also shared the news that Charlie Tice passed away.  Charlie will long be remembered as a philanthropic leader in Sussex County.
The group sang happy birthday to Dewey.
Bob gave a Hamilton for his happy dollar.  He is happy for the work that both his daughter and granddaughter do as missionaries in Cambodia and Columbia.
Tom is happy for the Rotary members in attendance who have not been at our meetings for a while and hopes they will become regular attendees.
Bill gave one happy dollar stating Notre Dame did well against Clemson and a second happy dollar that his daughter’s boyfriend came over for Christmas and did NOT propose to his daughter.

Picture Fines:
Mark Hontz paid a fine the coverage of the Newton Methodist Church carolers who participated in the Voices Raised in Song on the Green in Newton on December 24.  The Hontz family provided the musical accompaniment.  Mark was also happy to attend the Wreaths Across America event in Vernon. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the group gathers to carry out their mission to Remember, Honor and Teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.  Our fellow Rotarian, Wayne McCabe spoke at the event and Mark happily reported that Wayne kept his remarks brief but meaningful.

Newton Rotarian Newsletter:  Bill reminded everyone that we need people to take the minutes for each meeting and distributed a sign up sheet – we need someone to take the minutes on January 23.  Remember, the January 23rd meeting will be held at the SCCC in the Performing Arts building.  Bill will distribute a new sign up sheet for February.
Gift of Life:  Bill reminded everyone that raffle tickets are still available for the Super Bowl tickets.  This is the major source of funding for the Gift of Life program. The winner will be announced on January 18.  The prize includes airfare to Atlanta, and 3 nights at the hotel. Please see Jim Porter for more info and to purchase tickets.
Veterans Cemetery Restoration:  We are working with the Wallkill and Vernon Clubs to clean up the Veterans Cemetery.  Clean up will be done the 1st weekend in April.  More information to follow.

Chili Open:  The Chili Open will be January 26.  We need a few more volunteers.  Contact Jim if you can help out … it is a fun and social day with lots of good beverages.
Program:
In-service.  Carolyn introduced our program speaker, Wayne McCabe, fellow Rotarian and President of the Sussex County Historical Society.  Wayne shared information about the restoration of the Tully House and Newton Academy building.  The Academy Building was built in 1802 and served as a school.  It is the oldest standing school in Sussex County.  The restoration will include the development of a hand on children’s museum using original machinery.  One area will include a Print Shop.
A suit maker was the original owner of the Tully House.  The restored Tully House will include a museum on the first floor and administrative offices for the SCHS on the 2nd floor.  The 3rd floor will be the location of an outreach program for 4th graders and include the history and activities related to each of the 24 Sussex County municipalities.
The SCHS depends upon grants and donors for its funding.
50/50: Tom won the 50/50 the impressive prize of $9 … but not the pot.  Sorry Tom.
Bill closed the meeting at 1:23 PM.
