NEWTON ROTARY CLUB

MINUTES OF JUNE 7, 2023

Getting Started

President Todd called the meeting to order at 12:13 pm.   The salute to the flag was followed by several moments of prayer offered by Luis Ponce.  Our voices were raised, singing “America” under the guidance and encouragement of Steve Wescott.
It was noted that we had 21 of our club members present.  We also had 13 visitors, including the two sons of Mike Hanifan, four scholarship recipients and seven parents and guidance counselors from Newton High School, Kittatinny Regional High School and the County Technical High School.

John Frank provided an inspirational and graciously warm welcome to not only our members for being here today, but all of the visitors who also filled our tables alongside of us.  It has been a long time since we have had 34 people get together for one of our weekly luncheons!!
Happy Dollars
Denise Current – she opened up our Happy Dollar portion of the meeting by giving a FIVE-dollar bill, noting the Shoprite agreed to donate a platter of shrimp and a platter of cold cuts for the Annual Champaign Garden Party.
Todd Lattig – handed in a $1 – for wearing his with an interesting graphic that was supposed to protect him from bad jokes.
Barbara Miller – FIVE dollars for all of the students with us today.
Mike Hanifan – a buck for his daughter who has a perfect record of attendance.
Laura Camp – a dollar for her first great-grandson being brought into this world (what a blessing).
John Frank – FIVE dollars for his granddaughter who will be entering the workforce in the field of speech pathology.
Buz Tomasino – a dollar for being a Rotarian.
Carolyn Ottenbreit – a dollar for her daughter returning from a semester abroad, coming in from London.  It will be great to have her back home.
Bud Luthman – a buck – to celebrate his 80th birthday.  We all sang happy birthday to him since we missed that opportunity a week or two ago.  Surprisingly, it sounded on key for a change (although you should not trust my hearing to judge that!).
Alice Vigiletti – passed in a buck because she was happy that her son reached the next higher level of black belt.
Todd Lattig – wrapper this up with a dollar – as he was very happy this many people came out to the meeting today.

Announcements

Annual Garden Party – Marge spoke about the Annual Garden Party event that will take place on Saturday, June 24 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  It will be held at the Stillwater Community Center, on the rear of the former Swartswood Firehouse, just outside of the historic, beautiful and quaint village of Swartswood.  The theme for the party is A Toast to Summer.  The cost is a pittance – only $25 per person.  The event is going to be catered by Dominick’s in Newton, with board members bringing deserts.

Flyers for the event were again placed at every place setting for lunch today.

Since there is no time to get tickets printed up, Marge said that it was decided to email an announcement to all of the members and ask them to send in their checks so we know we don’t have to do follow-up calls to see if you are going to be joining us.  Checks can be mailed to Marge McCabe at 125 High St, Newton, NJ  07860 and be made payable to Newton Rotary Club.

Since the event is this upcoming Saturday, NOW is the time to confirm you will be joining us.

Memorial Day Parade – Marge spoke about the Memorial Day parade that was held in Newton.  Marge, Wayne, John, and Todd helped hand out the bottles of water to veterans at Memory Park, when the parade ended.  Alice made sure that cold bottles of water were available for the veterans where the parade began.  Many of the veterans expressed their gratitude for the water – especially after the end of the march.  People donated a total of $50 to us for the water.  A discussion of those of us there came to the conclusion that this event for our club should be considered for doing on an annual basis.

Ticket Raffle – our Club held a raffle for two tickets to the Boots, Bourbon, BBQ event at the Sussex County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 10th.  Carl Lazzaro was the one who had his ticket number pulled and was awarded the two event tickets.  I hope he enjoyed the event!!

Todd is Staying Where He Is – Todd used a few minutes to announce that, contrary to previously noted information, the Methodist Conference of New Jersey has decided it was best to not move him away from his flock here in Newton (obviously, you don’t want the flock disbursing into the surrounding neighborhood).  This is good news for the club – Todd will continue to be a member of the Board in his new capacity as Past President (or is that Past Potentate?).

The 2023 County Farm and Horse – It is that time of the year again – the County Farm and Horse Show is fast approaching us.  Todd noted that the event will run from Friday, August 4 through Saturday, August 12.

The Farm and Horse Show Committee has been meeting recently and has asked for feedback from the club members.  At the bottom of this newsletter, the committee has asked that you fill out and return the brief survey form.  The committee is looking for any suggestions from you on what improvements we should consider making to the booth – either physical improvements, staffing issues, scope of types of food offered, or general programmatic changes.

Remember – your suggestions can play an important role in the future of our one major fund-raising event each year.

Deadline for returning the survey forms is Friday, June 23

Program for next week is:
Wednesday, June 14 – our guest speaker will be the President of Sussex County Community College, our very own Jon Connolly.  Your editor was not informed on what Jon’s talk next Wednesday will be about.

Lauren Smith – had with her today her mother, Nicole, and her guidance counselor Lisa Casamassina.  Lauren told us that is her intention to become a nurse after going through college.  Presently, Lauren is a member of the Newton First Aid Squad and presently has targeted becoming an EMT in the near future.
Amanda Cleary – was accompanied today by her mother, Lyn Cleary, and her guidance counselor Lisa Casamassina.  Amanda spoke about taking two classes during the summer in marketing and has as her goal to become an “influencer” on marketing on Amazon.
Maximous Masih – came to the meeting today with his mother Joy Makich.  It was noted by his counselor that Maximous graduated from high school at the age of 16 – no small undertaking!!  His plans involve attending Perdue University with a major in mechanical engineering.  He already has had a job interview with the manufacturing company that occupies the former New Jersey Herald building.

Pictured are our four student scholarship recipients along with their parents and guidance counselors.
