President Bill called the meeting to order when Mickey’s short arm was on 12 and his long arm on 3.
Carl preached a sermon, oops I meant said the opening prayer.
We were led in song by Mr. Anonymous. A good bet would be that it was John Cuozzo as Steve and Mark were absent.
At this point in the meeting, the bulletin writer gasped when he realized he volunteered to be the scribe at our meeting that historically has a large number of guests. We were pleased to have both the guidance counselor from both VoTech, Michael Tressler, and KRHS, Jolene Hagarty, with us. John Frank’s guest was John Lontos , a former educator in Newton. Barbara Miller brought husband Ned and Bob Shankman brought wife Kathy. Susan Sharpe who is an executive with United Methodist Homes and also a fellow Rotarian someplace down near the shore was a guest. Last, but not least, George Kaiser was happy to bring Joyce, one of our favorite guest.
My notes on happy dollars were hard to decipher. John Cuozzo was proud of his Dad who was part of the assault on France on D-Day. Laura Camp had a conversation with another former resident of Newton, Robert Prescott. Denise is happy to be going to next year’s Rotary International Convention in Hawaii. Kurt Walton was happy that Denise never passes up an opportunity to assist not only locally but also nationally and internationally. Barbara Miller was happy for something that happened at KRHS and finally, John Frank was happy to have John Lontos with him at the meeting.
President Bill made a few announcements. He passed a card around to sign for former member Tom Lynch. Tom has fought a medical issue for a long time. Unfortunately, he is now under the care of hospice. John Frank spoke with Tom’s wife Susan who expressed how much Tom enjoyed his time as a member of this club. The other Rotary clubs in Sussex County will be holding a joint induction of officers on June 25 at the Lafayette House. Don’t forget the Garden Party coming up in just a few weeks. Tickets have been mailed out to all members. There are plans in motion for a district wide golf outing to be held sometime in October.
Barbara Miller reported the exchange student we support, who has been in Germany for the 2018 -2019 school year, has been having an “EXCELLENT” experience. He is a terse young man. He will be returning to Newton High School for his senior year this fall.
George Kaiser, chair of the scholarship committee, started our program by saying his committee once again had to make selections from an impressive list of candidates. The club will be giving out a total of $7,500 in scholarships. Carl Lazzaro introduced the recipients from VoTech. Rebecca Matthews will be attending Centenary and majoring in business. Her parents, Barbara and David were with her. Kyle Mosner will be attending SCCC and be studying criminal justice. Sounds like this young man might be following his father’s footsteps. He is a retired Andover Township police officer. Kyle’s mom and dad, Donna and Rod, were also present.
John Cuozzo introduced the students from Newton High School. Gabriella Guerriero, whose mother Denise was with her, will be attending in the fall. Natalie Squires will be a liberal arts major at SCCC. Natalie’s proud parents, Lauren and Bruce, were with her.
Barbara Miller had the honor of introducing the winners from KRHS. Annika Johnson will be attending Fairfield and will be an education major. A bit of trivia – Annika was captain of the BOYS golf team and carries a handicap of under 5. Her parents, Tina and Keith, accompanied her. Barbara Miller was a proud grandmother when she presented her granddaughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Gray, with her scholarship. Lexi will be attending SCCC and hopes to work with children in the future. Her parents, Pam and Sgt John, were beaming with pride.
Jim Taylor won $12 but much to Frank’s delight, Jim did not pick the Ace.
Note to myself –never volunteer to do the bulletin at the scholarship meeting again.
