The meeting was called to order by President Carolyn.  Alden offered the prayer, and song leader Steve led us in a rendition of “American the Beautiful.”  There was a large and talkative group of Rotarians gathered on this day, and lots of laughter and friendship was shared around the tables!

Introduction of Guests:  Frank introduced his wife Elaine, who was our only guest of this day.  She and all Rotarians were welcomed by John Frank.

HAPPY DOLLARS:  Lori Space Day, our guest speaker, came prepared with two happy dollars.  The first was for the baby cougar that she has been caring for since birth, and the second was for her first HUMAN baby granddaughter who was recently born!

Helen was happy that her cat has survived several surgeries and it appears that she will be ok.
John Frank was happy for John Roberts, whose company Fredericks Fuel sponsored a booth last weekend at The Shoppes in Lafayette.  One of the prizes offered was a substantial amount of fuel oil, and John and Val will now enjoy a warm winter as the recipients of that prize!

Peter Holmes, one of our recent new members, gave a happy $5 because he has wanted to become a Rotarian for a long time and is extremely happy to be a part of the Newton club.

DICTIONARY PROJECT:  In the ongoing effort to maintain contact with our third graders that received dictionaries, Kurt provided us with an opportunity to make another recording to share with them.  After sending our greetings, two illustrious educators in the group shared the words for the week.  George Kaiser’s word (with a little help from the audience) was “cornucopia,” and Frank Eberhard’s word was “pilgrim,” both very appropriate for Thanksgiving week.   It would be fun to be a fly on the wall when the children receive this message!!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

This coming MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25th, our Thanksgiving meeting will be held at Denise’s barn starting at 5 p.m.  There will be a cocktail hour (bring your own beverage) with appetizers, after which we will pack the duffel bags and backpacks that will be delivered to the Sussex County Department of Social Services.  Dinner will be served at approximately 6:30 p.m. and members of the club have signed up for a variety of food to share.  This should be an evening of fellowship and friendship, during which we will focus our efforts on helping those in our community who are in need of assistance.

There is no meeting on Wednesday, November 27th (the day before Thanksgiving).  However, we are trying to arrange delivery of the duffel bags and backpacks on Wednesday and may need assistance with loading and/or unloading them during the morning hours.  Stay tuned for an announcement regarding this!

The meeting of DECEMBER 4th WILL BE HELD AT HAMPTON DINER.  Meetings of DECEMBER 11 AND 18 WILL BE HELD AT BRISTOL GLEN.  There will be no meetings for two weeks thereafter (December 25 and January 1).  Meetings will resume on January 8th.

The CHILI OPEN is scheduled for Saturday, January 25, 2020, and Newton Rotary will again be responsible for the bar area.  Jim Konzel will be leading that effort.

SPEAKER: Our speaker for the day was Lori Space Day, who introduced herself as the “resident medical advisor” at Space Farms, speaking six different languages, including “redneck.”  She entertained us with humorous stories of things that go on in her daily life at the Zoo, and her new venture into standup comedy for the last year and a half.  Lots of fun and laughter was shared.

Carl Lazzaro won the 50/50 which was $9 today.  He left the other $9 in the pot to grow for the next person who draws the ace of spades!
