Last Week, Wednesday, November 8, 2017
Pres. John called the meeting of November 8 to order.  Jerry Hanifan offered this day's prayer.  Steve Wescott  launched the initial notes and the Newton Rotary Choristers followed in a resplendent performance of “God Bless America.”

Barbara Miller introduced our speaker, Caitlin Cramer, representing the Newton Free Clinic.  Barbara noted that Caitlin, a volunteer, is a tech at the clinic and “the face of the clinic.”  Caitlin highlighted the role of Dr. Jeffrey Liegner as founder of the clinic, the genesis and  historical journey of the clinic and the medical services provided to those in need in Sussex County.  The clinic celebrated its fifth birthday this year and is staffed solely by volunteers and supported by donations.

Guests
Clair Simonetti – guest of Steve McNally
Peter Leemers – guest of Mike Hanifan
Caitlin Cramer – guest speaker
And, a cameo appearance by past member Marge McCabe introduced by Carl Lazzaro.

 Announcements
Newton Rotary was awarded a $1,000 matching grant from the Rotary Foundation.  Special thanks to Barbara Miller for writing the grant.  Monies are earmarked for the Newton Free Clinic.

Reminder:  No meeting on Wednesday, November 22.

Tom Brodhecker issued a challenge to the Club.  He will match up to $500.  Monies will be used to help the Key Largo Rotary assist youth in the Keys in need of food, housing, etc. due to the devastating effects of hurricane Irma. Tom shared with the Club the remarkable comeback of the Keys and the contributions of Key Largo Rotary.

Happy Dollars
Why are so many people happy when I have to take the notes?

  • Mike Hanifan –  for his third place finish in a recent race.  And, for ye who doubt Mike's accomplishment, it was verified that there were more than three entrants in the race.
  • Helen Wescott – Happy to report a new addition to the family – Felix the Cat.  Not sure if Steve shares Helen's exuberance.  A bonding date for Steve and Felix will be set in the near future.
  • Clair Simonetti – happy to be here.
  • Denise Current – happy for the Homeless Project and the distribution of the food, duffle bags, backpacks, etc. on this day.
  • Buz Tomasino – for the 50th reunion of his Peace Corp experience in Honduras and for the delightful time he had at a baby shower.  Congratulations to Buz on being a grandfather once again!
  • Tom Brodhecker – for experiencing only minimal damage as a result of hurricane Irma. Tom also asked if anyone has any knowledge regarding how to modify a car for an individual with MS, please see him.  The request pertains to a student at KRHS.
Note
Today's notes were scribed with a pen from the 2017 RI Convention given to the editor by attendees, Laura Camp and Denise Current.  The verbal flow out of this pen is amazing!

 50/50
The lucky number this day was held by Dottie Budd ($11).  The Ace of Spades, though, is still being hidden by its 49 remaining family members.  It's hard to tell one from the other; they all dress alike -- in suits.
