NEWTON ROTARY CLUB

MINUTES OF APRIL 5, 2023

Getting Started

President-Elect Carl Lazzaro stood in for President Todd and called the meeting to order at 12:21 pm.   The salute to the flag was followed by a moment of prayer given by Bud Luthman.  Our voices were raised under the guidance and encouragement of John Cuozzo in a patriotic tune.

It was noted that we had 11 of our club members present.   Carl thanked those present for being here for the luncheon, but bemoaned the fact that there were only 11 of us gathered together.  Wayne McCabe suggested that we begin calling members again and encouraging them to turn out for meetings – especially next week when we will be visited by Past District Governor Raymond F. Freaney, Jr., who served in that office in Rotary year 2019-2020.  Who knows – possibly he can offer some new insights as to just what is going on with our “District”.  Or not.   We can always ask and find out.  Ray is a member of the Madison Rotary Club.

Happy Dollars were contributed by:

John Cuozzo – gave $5 – because the Rev. Chris Streeter has been appointed to serve as the new Rector of Christ Episcopal Church.
Laura Camp – gave $1 – her daughter’s mother-in-law turns 90 on April 6th and lives in Liberty Towers.
Jerry Hanifan – gave $1 - for Carl arriving on time today.
Carl Lazzaro – gave $1 – because last week he turned 80 years old.  He openly wondered just where to time had gone.
Buz Tomasino – gave $1 – to remind everyone here that April 22nd was Earth Day – Buz told us to go out and plant a tree in his name.
Bud Luthman – gave $1 – to help memorialize the fact that he and Lois will be celebrating their FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.  It would seem that these two wonderful people are driving UP the national average.

Announcements

Carl spoke about the Military Vehicle event at the Fair Grounds taking place on April 28, 29 and 30.  We will be opening our food booth and will be the ONLY group selling food there from a booth.  I guess you could say that we are going to hopefully corner the market on this event.  Carl began circulating the sign-up sheet for that event today.  Hours for our work shifts will be are:
Friday, the 28th – One shift – 4:30 to 7:00 PM
Saturday, the 29th - Two shifts – 8:30 to 12:30 and 12:30 to 5:30 PM
Sunday, the 30th – Two shifts  - 8:30 to 12:30 and 12:30 to 3:30
We need our members to sign up for this project.  It will be work!  It will be fun!  It will raise a goodly amount of money for our club.  IT WILL PASS THE 4 WAY TEST !!!

Today was a scheduled In-Service Day, so there was no scheduled speaker.  However, speakers for the next three weeks include:

Wednesday, April 12 – Past District Governor Raymond F. Freaney, Jr.,   will be joining our lunch tables.  It is really important to make sure our attendance for that meeting will be respectable.
Wednesday, April 19 – Griffin Caldwell, who works with Dykstra Engineering will be presenting us with information about the new commercial and residential buildings going up on Water Street (a.k.a. U.S. Route 206).  Aside from Thor Labs, this is the largest new construction project going on in Newton.
Wednesday, April 26 – a presentation about Scouting in our community.  Our very own Jim Taylor will be leading the discussion.

Wrapping Up the Meeting

Frank Eberhart was asked to draw the winning ticket – which was held by Bud Luthman, putting six dollars back in his pocket.  However, Bud drew the Queen of spades from the deck, thus creating the base of the now growing pot, totaling six dollars (remember, the large pot was won last week, so we start over).
The chocolate candy box at the head table was raided at the end of the meeting, with ten bars being purchased just before we formally adjourning the meeting.
President-Elect Carl closed down the meeting at 1:09 pm, with the admonition of traveling home safely.

Respectfully submitted,
Wayne T. McCabe
