Minutes of the 03/09/2016 Meeting
President, Jerry, opened the meeting with the pledge. Jerry Murphy offered the prayer and we all sang a rousing version of It’s a Grand Ole Flag with the resounding voice of Mark Hontz.
Pres. Jerry introduced Jim Taylor as our official Seargent of Arms. Jim will be enforcing the rules and collecting fines from the club members. This means keeping a lot of singles to pay up for your birthday, anniversary, coming in late to meetings or leaving early, caught not wearing your Rotary pin or badge. We are all fair game!
Pres. Jerry announced that the meetings will be started on time from now on and asked that if you come late, please don’t interrupt Pam’s lunch. Wait until the end and then pay Pam. But, remember to pay!
SUNSHINE: Famous Quote Game
- “Once a child learns to use the library, the doors to learning are always open.” ~Barbara Bush~
- “Every moment wasted looking back keeps us from moving forward.” ~Hilary Clinton~
- “If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much.” ~Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis~
Note: Wrong answers cost $1. So do right answers.
Birthdays: Denise Current, Jerry Nechamkin (five birthdays in his family this month) and Carl Lazzaro
Announcements:
- John thanked everyone for their help with the Pancake Breakfast. It was a success.
- A big thank you for the efforts of John, Rotarians, many Interact members, Carl, Dave, and Barbara. The bake sale sold about $300 worth of goodies plus $27 worth of left over cookies that Barbara brought in and Jim “gently” sold at $1/bag.
- Pres. Jerry reported that Interact/Rotaract are extremely important, not only for what they do, but for the future of Rotary and the generous assistance they always give to co-manning our events. Charles has been extremely active towards fostering our relationships and supporting their endeavors, including financially. The short term result is astonishing. Pope John will be our fourth Interact Club and a fifth being formed. In addition, Kittatiny already has an Early Act Club for grammar school and two more are in the works. In our discussion with the Interacts, we spoke about their Inter-Club social events, Interact assistance with our clubs social media, and their involvement with the Early Act kids. Jerry’s been hoping to jump start this and Charles is doing an exemplary job.
- Charles brought in a bag of stuff, including his pocketbook, to be sold by Alice on E-bay and asked that we all bring at least one item in next week, and more thereafter. Becauusszzz….this money will go to the Interact/Rotaract/Early Act ice cream parties, etc. Jim Taylor bought the soufflé pan for $20 to kick off this program.
- Our Volleyball Tournament is on March 18th. All are welcome to come and root for your favorites. Come have a good time while supporting the Gift of Life Program. See Chris Wolverton to sign up and/or sponsor a team. More sponsors are needed.
PROGRAM:
Our speaker was Mary Beth Kohberger, Assistant Golf Pro from Newton Golf Club who was accompanied by her husband Robin. She gave tips on how to improve your golf game. She spoke about the history of golf which possibly originated in China, but Scotland had games closer to our game of today as early as 1457. There are currently 15,000 golf courses in the US and 26 million golfers.
Why should we play? Fitness, enjoyment of the outdoors and just plain social fun. Age is not a factor as all levels can play, it’s a great way to make connections for friends and business.
Three points are important to the game.
1- Technique-take lessons from a pro. Don’t learn the wrong moves from friends.
2- Physical- only do what your body allows you to.
3- Mental- You need to be in the present to play well. Concentrate and enjoy the moment.
Questions – Why are there 18 holes? That’s how many holes the Scotch could play while drinking, or, there are only 18 shots in a bottle, or nobody knows for sure.
What defines a Pro? You get paid for lessons. It takes 3 years worth of points, lessons, and you must pass a players test and interview.
Happy Dollars $ generously given by:
Laura Camp- for witnessing the Trump helicopter arriving while visiting a golf outing.
Jim Taylor- happy for a great Pancake Breakfast.
Charles Grotyohann- also happy for the Pancake Breakfast and the volunteers.
Bob Shankman gave a dollar for Carl to sit back down.
Helen & Carolyn- thank you to the Interact kids that helped at the Breakfast.
50/50: Won by Carolyn Ottenbreit but, $298 was left in the pot.
