July 12, 2017 Meeting Notes
“The Changing of the Guard”
Our weekly Rotary Club meeting was opened by Carl Lazzaro, who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer. After Steve led us in singing God Bless America, Carl began with meeting with the Installation of the Incoming Officers. He explained the process that leads to a member becoming an officer, and then swore in John Roberts, our President for the 2017-2018 Rotary year. Other Board of Director members then sworn in included Helen Westcott, Carolyn Ottenbreit, and Pam Lazzaro. Absent for the induction ceremony was Bill Kehoe.
Outgoing President Charles then presented John with the gavel and his President’s badge and pin. John then presented Charles with his Past President badge and pin, as well as a plaque thanking him for his service as President of Newton Rotary Club for 2016-2017.
Following Lunch, President John presided at the rest of the meeting.

Program:
Cheerful Heart Mission (a Christian based but non-denominational organization). Dr. Alberto and John Cornwell, project coordinators, gave an excellent update on this wonderful project that has three components: a Dental Mission, a Latrine Project, and a Music Education program. The dental mission and latrine projects have been running for 7 years in the Dominican Republic and Haiti and have been life-saving to thousands of children and adults there. Because there is absolutely NO sanitation in rural areas, Cheerful Heart Mission volunteers have formed partnerships with local families in both countries to teach them proper sanitation and to assist them in building the latrines.
Dr. Alberto and her volunteers have performed thousands of dental procedures, and also teach the use of toothbrushes and toothpaste for improved dental hygiene.
The Music Education program is just three years old, but has provided an avenue for children and adults to come together to sing and to perform at concerts. EXCELLENT PROGRAM!
50/50: Bob Shankman won $11. But left the remaining $280 in the pot!!
