Newton Rotary Minutes:  Linda McConville

The Newton Rotary Club meeting was held on May 3, 2017 at noon at the Spring Street Pub and Grill.

Guests:  We had a full house and a number of guests which included –
Bob Pityo from the Cedar Grove Club who was George’s mentor as both President and District Governor; Steven Flynn and Rich Russo from the Newark Club; Joyce Wishart, Richard Radcliffe, Barry and Naomi, Kathy Shankman, and Beam our exchange student.
John Frank welcomed everyone.

HAPPY $$:  There were many Happy Dollars:
  • Kathy Shankman wished Bob a happy birthday.
  • Alice was sad about her precious pet, Boots, who isn’t doing well but she was happy that her son and daughter-in-law are going for their 2nd Black Belt.
  • Jim Porter was happy that we had such a crowded room.  He also went to the Wine & Hopps Fest held by the Walkill Valley Club.  They raised $10-15K!
  • Carolyn Ottenbreit saw Hamilton and gave it a definite thumbs up.
  • Last but not least, President Charles said he was happy that Carolyn ran the meeting the week before as Charles was hospitalized with an extremely low heart rate.  After many tests, it was determined that he has Lyme disease and is getting continuous antibiotics through a PECC line. He asked for everyone to keep him in their prayers.
Induction of a New Member:  Steve Wescott and Bill Kehoe inducted and the Club welcomed our new member , Richard Radcliffe.  Steve emphasized the importance of present Rotarians making the new members feel welcome in the Club and to participate in activities.  He also emphasized the need for new members to jump in and get involved right from the start.

Program:  Bob Shankman gave a very interesting and thorough review of women in Rotary as this is this is the 30 year celebration of women in the Newton Rotary. Laura Camp was the first woman in the Newton Rotary club – June 1988.   Pam Lazzaro joined in August of the same year.  We’ve come a long way since the days that women were only allowed to visit with their husbands and were referred to as Rotary Annes.  It took a Supreme Court ruling in 1987 – wow, not that long ago!  Today we have 25 women in the Newton Rotary.
