Minutes of the 03/23/2016 Meeting

Edited by Alice Vigiletti

Guests:
Carisa Current, and Dennis Donero, Co-Chair of the Gift of Life North N.J., were greeted by Megan Sandow

SUNSHINE:
Pres. Jerry shared with us Sunshine on this cloudy day, famous quotes from H.G. Wells, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe & Nancy Reagan.  Try to match them up!  (see answers at end)
1- “A woman is like a Teabag. Only in hot water do you realize how strong she is”.
2- “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring”.
3- “Be a first rate version of yourself, instead of a second rate version of somebody else”.
4- “Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.  You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world”.
5-”Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe”.
Very few guesses were ventured from al the high rollers.  Jerry & John R. will be changing the rules to attract more guesses.

Announcements:
Pres. Jerry opened the meeting with the pledge.  The prayer was dedicated to the recuperation of our fellow members in the hospital, Judge Weber and Carl Lazzaro.  We sang God Bless America.
Get well cards were passed around for Judge Weber and Carl Lazzaro for all to sign and to let them know they are in our prayers.

John Roberts feels better since an addendum to last week’s minutes acknowledging Pres. Jerry’s presentation of flowers to him.  He said he was so overwhelmed that he forgot to take them home, but gave them away to one of our servers.

Rotary District 7470 Golf Outing is coming up on April 21st at Black Bear.  They need foursomes so please sign up!

The Wallkill Valley Rotary is celebrating their 70th Anniversary on May 14th at the Lafayette House.  All are welcome to join them.  Let’s turn out to support them since Newton Rotary sponsored them 70 years ago.  It’s a part of our history too!

Wallkill Valley Rotary is also sponsoring a beer and wine tasting on April 29th at Grape & Hops.  Tickets are $25, or $15 for non-drinkers.

“Fireside Chats” will be at Pres. Jerry’s and Lonnie’s on April 26th from 6 to 8 PM.  Pres. Jerry will notify speakers and attendees.  Volunteer seasoned Rotarians should notify Pres. Jerry should they desire to speak.
Rotary decals for your cars have been ordered.  Buy one for your car!  Some Rotarians prefer the magnet type.  Pam will look into it.

“Polio Plus” needs our help to step up and fill our responsibility as Rotarians.  Our goal is $100 each so please make your checks payable to Rotary Foundation.  This also counts towards your Paul Harris donation, is accumulative, and can be designated to Polio right on the check.

Newton Rotarians support at all our fundraisers must be stepped up simply by showing up in the very least.

PROGRAM:
The guest speaker was Ken Fox, Architect.  He has won the National Green Building Award, “green” meaning sustainable.  “Leed Certified” means a sustainable site, parking storm water, water conservation, green power energy, lighting and many other innovations. His focus is on mostly residential and waterfront houses where heating, cooling and insulation are the best ways to save energy and money.

Many Happy Dollars $ generously given by:
  • Denise Current was able to finally get in touch with Claire in Brussels and found after 5 tense hours, she was ok.
  • John Frank is happy that Carl & Pam are doing well considering, and for Bob Shankman’s (“Air Shankman”)fine orange sneakers making the statement “orange is the new black”.  LOL!  Also, John’s granddaughter is a princess in a school play.  Grandma and Grandpa both gave objective reviews of “she nailed it”!
  • Alice Vigiletti is happy EBay sales reaped $303.49 from very generous donated items.  Money is earmarked for Interact/Rotaract/Early Act kids.
  • Charles Grotyohann is happy volleyball tournament went well; Carl is doing better and says “he will be back”!  Charles also learned a lot at Rotary regional meeting, like how important the Clubrunner website is as a tool to help our club run more efficiently.  He handed out informational brochures.
  • Chris Wolverton is happy for the support for volleyball.  Sterling Corp. got knocked out of first place this year with Newton High School taking home the honors.  We raised about $3000 this year for the Gift of Life.
  • Dennis Donero was happy about that too.
  • Alice thinks there were a few more but she was getting writer’s cramp.

50/50:
$10 was won by Nancy Morrissey, but not the pot!
