Newton, New Jersey May 27, 2020 Carolyn Ottenbreit, Editor
This Week: We will hold our third online Zoom meeting this Wednesday, 6/3/20 at 12:30 PM. Please email carolyn_ottenbreit@ml.com if you did not receive a Zoom link.
Last week: We began the meeting with a prayer and remembrance of Tom Brodhecker, a member of the Newton Rotary Club since 1982. Carl Lazzaro remembered his friend as a wonderful Rotarian and representative of Sussex County. Tom joined the Newton Rotary Club in 1982. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and a Major Donor. He was also on the Founding Committee for the Rotary Food Booth at the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show. He will be sorely missed by the Sussex County agricultural community and by his fellow Rotarians. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom’s family.
Happy $: If you cannot attend the Zoom meeting, you can email your virtual Happy Dollars to Pam Lazzaro at ptl18@ptd.net
Dawn was happy to see Tom Brodhecker on the Rotary Zoom call last week.
Bob Shankman is also happy for Tom’s life and contributions to his community.
Carl Lazzaro was happy to note Bill Kehoe’s minority vote at a recent meeting of the High Point Board of Education.
Announcements:
Our Rotary District 7475 is matching Paul Harris points, to a maximum of 100,000 points, on donations to the Rotary Foundation – now extended through June 15th. If you have not yet made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, or if you have already made a donation but would like to do more in the current environment, you can go to the Foundation website at www.rotary.org/give and login with your Clubrunner ID to give online. Other options include downloading the Rotary Foundation Contribution Form to send a check, or mail a check to our Foundation Chair, Steve Wescott, and he will forward it to the Foundation (this last option may be too slow for matching points, given my recent experience with the post office). Carl noted that Tom Brodhecker’s obituary listed Rotary as a recipient of memorial donations and suggested that donations be made in memory of Tom this month.
We had tentatively planned a dinner at the Wallpack Inn on June 27th, in lieu of this year’s Garden Party. At this time, the Wallpack Inn is closed. We will continue to look for opportunities to gather as a group as the economy reopens.
Please contact Pam if you wish to be added to the on call list to volunteer at Manna House.
The Pancake Breakfast, scheduled for May 2nd, has been postponed to October 17th. It is not too late to renew your placemat ad! If you did not receive a letter, please contact Todd Lattig, our Pancake Breakfast Chair, at pastor.toddlattig@gmail.com .
The Scholarship Program is in process. The Guidance Counselors at each school have selected the students this year, since we could not conduct interviews. Most schools are having a virtual “awards night” and Rotary Scholarships will be announced at that time – the students have not yet been notified.
There will be a virtual RI Convention this year on June 20th-26th. The general sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, with breakout sessions on the weekdays. If you follow the link to “View Full Schedule,” you can see the breakout sessions for each day. While it is free to attend, they are still requiring participants to register. https://www.riconvention.org/en.
Last week, Governor Murphy increased the limit on outdoor gatherings from 10 to 25 people. The limit on indoor gatherings remains at 10 people. I hope we can plan outdoor meetings this summer, but it is too early to tell.
The District is running a district-wide 50/50, with 50% of sales distributed to the clubs. If you are interested in selling, or buying, tickets, please contact President Carolyn at carolyn_ottenbreit@gmail.com. The new draw date is June 25th.
