No Meeting Happy Thanksgiving!

Wednesday, December 2, 2015
Choral harbingers of the season, the Kittatinny Regional High School madrigal singers.

Last Meeting, November 18, 2015
Pres. Jerry led us in the Pledge of Allegiance; Kevin Daly offered the invocation and John Iliff “warmly” greeted all in attendance.  Led by maestro, Steve Wescott, the combined choruses of Newton Rotary sang America the Beautiful – it was pure acoustical alchemy.

Move over Emeril, Rachel Ray, Lidia, et.al. “There's a new sheriff in town.”  Rob Rhine is without doubt the next “Celebrity Chef.”  He is “on fleek.”  Look for his pilot on one of the major networks.  Perhaps, even a book signing at our Club luncheon.

Rob's culinary skills were on display as he took on the journey of how to prepare the most savory, succulent Thanksgiving turkey ever.  A master chef's narrative it was.  Truly, a treat that titilatted the taste buds.

Note:  Many in attendance asked for Rob's recipe for “the best Thanksgiving turkey ever.”  It will not appear here!  Being somewhat culinary challenged, the writer could not capture the contents (I guess ingredients would be a better word) nor the amount or proportions thereunto of Rob's formula for success.  Buy Rob's book!

Celebrity of the Day – Mike Strada.  Not one, but two photos in color; one even above the fold.  A costly meeting for Mike.

Announcements
There were many!

Pres. Jerry thanked Megan Sandow and Jim Furgeson for the tour of the Newton Medical Center's new 3D Mammogram Unit, the Charles Tice Cardiovascular Unit and dinner.  Pres. Jerry also noted that the Board will be discussing a distribution from the interest earned from the Foundation Trust to be dedicated to the 2015 Year of The Woman's Health Center.

Pres. Jerry and Pres. Elect Charles both commented on the fun and success of the social at Sheridans.  Charles also laid the foundation for a competitive dart tourney at Sheridans on January 11.  Hopefully, a $1,000 prize will go to the charity selected by the winning club's team.  Newton Rotary dart throwers please see Charles if you wish to audition for these games.  All dart throwers begin your training regimen now.  “We are in to win it.”  Support your local dart throwers on January 11 at Sheridans.

Pres. Jerry thanked Carl Lazzaro for representing Newton Rotary at the American Legion flag pole dedication.

Charles announced that a Club in-service meeting will be scheduled soon.  Jerry asked all committees to be ready.

Pres. Jerry noted that a decision will be made by the Board regarding the Club's involvement in the solar panel project of Lenape Valley Rotary.

Pres. Jerry recognized all Paul Harris fellows in attendance.

Charles led the Club in a resuscitation  of the 4-way test via a recitation.

Charles and Barbara Wortmann  commented on their meeting with the Rotaract Club at SCCC.  Members of the Club will join us at a future meeting for an update on the Club's activities.

Charles thanked Megan Sandow and Jim Furgeson for their hospitality and hosting the Board at the Newton Medical Center and commented on the importance of the Newton Medical Center to the community.

John Roberts “kicked off” the pancake breakfast to be held at the Newton Methodist Church on March 5.

Chris Woverton “served” us with the opening salvo of the volleyball tournament in support of the Gift of Life to be held on March 25; location – TBD.  Plenty of time to get in shape.  Training begins now!

Jim Porter announced Gift of Life raffle tickets ($10) are still on sale.  Winner goes to the Super Bowl.

Happy Dollars

Happiness once again abounded!

  • Tom Digby – for the social meeting at Sheridans and for the Club's attainment of the $100 goal for Change for Polio Plus.
  • Kurt Gewecke – for the memory of Bud's mother.  “Behind every great pastor is a great wife.”
  • Barbara Wortmann – for the Club's donation of a carload of items to the Red Cross for their undertaking for our troops.
  • Barbara Miller – for serving on the Rotary Leadership Institute Faculty.  For a certificate she found given to her father for a program in 1951 to Newton Rotary.  The certificate was signed by Dr. Spurgeon and Ernie Wallace.  For appreciation of Megan's and Jim's efforts regarding the Board's visit to the Newton Medical Center.
  • Jim Taylor – for his attendance at the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council's soiree where he was treated to watch Jim Porter learn the Samba. For John Roberts' daughter who is a student at East Carolina University where Jim is a graduate.
  • Kevin Daly – for the upcoming Rutgers vs. Army football game and for his son who will be suited up with the Scarlet Knights.
  • Laura Camp – for seeing our former maitre'd, Chris, and for seeing Gary LaFranco.
  • Charles Grotyohann – for Linda McConville's help with one of his clients (and, then, who quickly secured a commitment from Linda for a future program).  One happy dollar for “two” “happys.”  Smooth move!  Sadly, Charles gave a final, final field hockey report.  Happily, though, he noted three more years of baseball are in the offing.
  • Bud Luthman – gave a “PC” happy dollar for the Marines who were photographed praying and for the 100th anniversary of the USMC.  Bud also gave a dollar for the open space vote.  A very important happy dollar was given by Bud in  memory of his mother and for the long-standing reservation for the room reserved for her in heaven.
  • “That's All Folks.”  Man, there sure were a lot of happy dollars to report!

50/50
Club soothsayer, Charles Grotyohann told Rob Rhine that being in possession of the Rotary Wheel brings good fortune.  Rob Rhine then pulled his own number!  A $15 draw, but he couldn't repeat the feat for the big pot ($131).  The pot continues to grow.  Remember:  He who isn't in it, isn't going to win it.
