Newton Rotary Club Meeting
October 25, 2017
Our weekly Rotary meeting was held at 5 p.m. at the barn at Denise and Dave Current’s home. We had a wonderful time working together and packed 36 bags of food, 24 duffel bags (12 men and 12 women) and 12 backpacks (6 for children ages 5 – 11 and 6 for children ages 12 – 16). These will all be donated to area agencies that will distribute them as needed to homeless people in Sussex County.
While we were working Carl was busy at the grille, and we then enjoyed a delicious dinner of bratwursts, sausages, German franks, and kielbasa accompanied by macaroni and cheese, salad, potato salad and all the trimmings!!! If that wasn’t enough, there was ice cream and toppings for dessert!! Thanks to Denise and Laura for preparing the side dishes and making sure we were well fed. Any food that was remaining after dinner was taken to Manna House on Thursday.
President John called the meeting to order before we ate dinner; the blessing was offered by Jon and Steve led us in song.
Guests at the meeting included Rose Sanford, a friend of Denise who made hats and scarves to donate to the duffel bags; Lonnie and Marian, also friends of Denise who worked at the Farm to Table fundraiser and made scarves to donate; Dave and Jaime Current, Denise’s family; Kathy Shankman (wife of Bob); Anne Flowers, friend of Laura; and Valerie Frank, John’s wife.
Happy Dollars: Dave Current—happy to be here; Jaime Current—happy for such a great turnout; Laura—happy her garage is now empty; Jim T.—happy for Denise’s leadership in project; President John—happy for Denise and her family; Barb—happy for Denise and also for no damage to her home in Florida; John F.—happy that Steve and Helen shared a glass of wine since he left his bottle at home—also happy that Frank did not charge him for something (missed that in my notes!); Jon S.—happy for a good doctor report as the mass on his kidney is benign and for his daughter passing the Cosmetology state board; Charles—happy to celebrate daughter #3’s 24th birthday and also happy to have made a deposit on daughter #2’s wedding reception!
Picture Fine: Sally Tomasino was honored by the 4H, but Buzz didn’t have $1 to pay the fine so Jon S. paid it for him.
Announcements: Branchville Rotary is hosting a “bourbon and whiskey” tasting on January 11th and they have invited all of the clubs in Sussex County to join with them. More information will be available soon.
50/50: There was $16 in the weekly drawing and Frank had the winning ticket. Before drawing a card from the deck, he ceremoniously touched Laura, Barbara, and Pam. He then mixed up the cards and drew the Ace of Spades to win another $404.00 for a total of $420!! He was reminded of the luck that the three women he touched brought him, but he did not share and was far more concerned with making sure that Elaine did not find out about his winnings!!! Congratulations Frank!!!
