NEWTON ROTARY CLUB
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2022
The meeting was called to order by President Todd followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer given by Louis. All then joined in with a hardy rendition of “God Bless America.” The head table was full with President Todd, V.P. Carl, Treasurer Helen and Secretary Marge. This post Fair Week meeting attracted 15 members. (Bob & Kathy, Jim, Wayne, Steve, Aldon, Louis, Nancy, John, Buz, and George. There were no visitors other than the program speakers, so Kathy welcomed all present.
Good thing George K. attended, as Steve Wescott presented him with a special pin that recognized George for reaching the Paul Harris 5th level contribution to the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations, George!
Several members were HAPPY at today’s meeting…..Todd, for having his daughter start college at Bloomsburg University, Jim T. with a special note in appreciation for Carl’s tireless work to supply the Food Booth with needed produce, John C. gave a whopping $5 for a family gathering celebration, and Nancy M. for the great teamwork displayed on every shift she witnessed at the Food Booth.
Carl gave a brief review of the Fair Food Booth operation--Details to follow. Overall, it was successful, except of course for the extreme heat and the power outage. He noted that the Booth will need help for two more events: One being the Military Show Swap on October 21-23 and the German Christmas Market, December 2-4.
Today’s program was given by Jacob Gaeta, site manager for the Market Street Mission at 247 Spring Street in Newton. Their primary location is at 9 Market Street in Morristown. The Mission was started in 1889 to serve the needs of the homeless, poor, and those struggling with addiction. Jacob explained how the Mission cares for the immediate needs for men, women and children and helps them live stable lives for the long term. We were also introduced to Al Benimon, a participant of the Mission’s programs for the past 12 months. Al gave testimony of how the Mission has changed his life and freed him from 40 years of addiction. His one regret was that his mother did not witness his recovery.
For anyone who is interested in learning more about the MSM, Debbie McKenna is the Volunteer & Events Manager for the Mission and can arrange tours. Contact her at 973-538-6337.
