Newton, New Jersey           June 24, 2020              Carolyn Ottenbreit, Editor

This Week:  We will meet at 12:30 PM on Zoom.  President Jim will send out a link to the call.  Please email Jim at jftaylor@centurylink.net if you do not receive an invitation.
Last Wednesday, Dori Zarr of Toastmasters gave us an overview of the Toastmasters organization, pointed out the similarities to Rotary International, and invited members to join a Zoom meeting, held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.  Please email Dori at dorizarr@gmail.com to receive a Zoom link.  A typical meeting would include two, 5-7 minute speeches by members, followed by 2-3 minutes of evaluation & commentary.

Happy $:  If you cannot attend the Zoom meeting, you can email your virtual Happy Dollars to Dawn Hall at dawnahall6678@gmail.com

Announcements:

  • On Wednesday, 6/24, Carolyn accepted a District 7475 Care and Share Award on behalf of the Newton Rotary Club.  Our Homeless Project won First Place in the Home and Shelter category!  Special thanks to Denise Current, who organized and hosted the Farm-to-Table fundraiser, hosted us all for the Pack-the-Bags Thanksgiving Dinner, and saw that the duffle bags and backpacks were delivered to Social Services for distribution to the homeless.  Barbara Miller wrote and submitted the Care and Share Application.  Pam Lazzaro coordinated our volunteer efforts at Manna House.  So many other Newton Rotary Club members gave of their time, talent, and treasure for this project that I cannot list them all.  The best part of this project is that it involved the entire Club!
  • The Rotary Global Grant to fund pediatric heart surgeries in Sri Lanka, in conjunction with Gift of Life International, is finally underway.  The first 5 surgeries were completed last week and remittance is on its way from the Global Grant account, which is managed by Newton Rotary as the International partner.
  • The Golf Committee has voted to skip the 2020 Newton Rotary Golf Outing, and reconvene the event in 2021.  Questions regarding dinner logistics and sponsorships could not be resolved in time for the September date.
  • If anyone has ideas for Zoom programs, perhaps a speaker who would like to join our call, please let Jim Taylor or Laura Camp know.
  • We continue to brainstorm ideas for fundraisers.  All suggestions are welcome.
