Getting Started
President Todd called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm. The salute to the flag was followed by a moment of prayer offered by Luis Ponce. Our voices were raised, singing “America” under the guidance and encouragement of Steve Wescott.
It was noted that we had 23 of our club members present, with Val Frank, John’s wife, as his guest. Laura Camp thanked those present for being here for the monthly In-Service luncheon.
Happy Dollars were contributed by:
Bud Luthman – opened up with $5 – for trio to Dallas to see his granddaughter and her cheerleading squad. Along with her squad taking part in a nation-wide cheerleading contest at Disney in Florida, the contest was broken down into 4 divisions, with hundreds of squads taking part in this major event. Teams in each of the divisions were involved in contests throughout the several days the program was running.
Two things Bud took away with him from the event – it was great to be with his family and to see his granddaughter be initiated into the National Honor Society. The second thing – Disney ain’t cheap !!
John Cuozzo – gave $1 – glad to be back for lunch with everyone – and yes, thank you, he is feeling much better.
Helen Wescott – gave $1 because she and Steve went to Pittsburg – their granddaughter was offered a job as either Minnie or Mickey Mouse in a production that will begin June 17th.
Gerry Hanifan – gave $1 – because he was able to see his son receive the Scouting award at our meeting last Wednesday.
Kathie Shankman – gave $1 – for today is her husband’s birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB !!
John Frank – gave $1 – for the person with North Carolina plates parked just outside of the windows at our meeting who managed to take up three parking spaces. Wink, wink: Frank Eberhart
Carolyn Ottenbreit – gave $1 – for the people who volunteered to work at the food booth this past weekend.
Bud Luthman – gave another $1 – because he and Lois celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary back on April 28.
Announcements
President Todd asked if there was anyone in the club who could use a get-well card or some similar expression of concern and well wishes. It was suggested that we send a card to Pam Lazzaro. The card was circulated and signed by everyone present.
President Todd reported on the Military Vehicle Show and Swap Meet event at the Fair Grounds that took place on April 28, 29 and 30. Friday afternoon was the final amount of work setting up, but only a small amount of sales were achieved. Saturday, the weather was on and off. The sales were reasonably steady, but not breaking down any doors. Also, just down the road, the Boy Scouts opened up their booth and ran competition to us – despite our club having been told we would be the only food booth open at the event. Sunday was essentially a washout with the weather, so the second shift was told to stay home and the first shift cleaned up and closed down early.
Marge McCabe reported to the members on the status of chocolate bar sales. By having the bars on sale at high volume personal service firms (barbers and beauty parlors, and other commercial establishments) sales have maintained a steady fast pace. It seems that by the end of April, we will start to cut back on the sales – by which point we will have a rough net profit of $2,000. That means we would have sold roughly 2,000 candy bars. Marge said that we would pick back up again in the early fall of this year. John’s Barbershop in Newton still wants us to keep supplying them with the bars. Apparently, their clientele have developed a real hard core sweet tooth for that which we are selling. They go through about half a box per week.
Todd once again stressed that the blue jars on the tables are for loose change or folding money to go to help fight polio. Over the last few weeks, Todd has reminded us that we thought we rid the world of this plague, it crept back out in different spots around the globe in countries that do not encourage or outright forbid the inoculation of children. Because 2 of the jars aren’t there any more (one got broken and the other is MIA), Laura donated 6 brand new clear jars to help keep out efforts in raising funds for this cause.

Program for next week is In-Service:
Wednesday, May 10 – Barbara Miller, is freshly back from an extended vacation in the southern latitudes. Her discussion will concern a program being run by Rotary International. Given that Barbara is doing the presentation, I am confident that what she will be covering today will be interesting and educational for our members.
The Wrap-Up
The winning 50/50 ticket – Wayne McCabe was asked to pick the winning ticket for the 50/50. He picked the ticket held by Jim Taylor. However, he drew the four of hearts and left the growing pot still growing. It’s up $21 now.
Todd gaveled the meeting closed at 1:20 pm, with the admonition of traveling home safely.
