Speaker for today was our own Carl Lazzaro. Fire Fighter/ Emergency Squad
He had on the table a display of firefighting gear which when worn weighs 30lbs plus the oxygen you need to carry.
One of the most important things in firefighting is your ears, If they feel warm it’s time to get out of the building. There is a buddy system when they go into a burning building - 2 men in / two men out, always two together.
Ben Franklin started the first Fire Department. Today, the County meets with the Chiefs in each town. The towns work together on the fires. Firetrucks are highly customized and only last about 10-15 years. They keep them clean and check that they are always in good working condition. Every firefighter goes through an education and training program. This is ongoing so they can keep learning the best way to fight fires. The firetrucks are the most expensive purchase for a town. They generally run $200,000 to $700,000.
There is a fine system in place – A person calls 911 and alerts go off on the phone and pagers to alert the Fire dept. And they come as quick as they can. Every firefighter knows what their job is, it’s very organized. The system has been upgraded and is very efficient. The first truck there carries 900 Gallons of water – they say if you can’t get it out with that it is lost.
Steve Wescott – Won the 50/50 drawing of $4. But not the Pot which is getting quite large! $259.00
