May 17, 2017 Meeting:

President Charles opened the meeting with a very nice poetic tribute to all Mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day, and Mark led us in the singing of America.

Announcements:
  • Charles attended the “Farm to Table” event hosted on May 13th by Denise and David and commented on what a nice affair it was.
  • District Assembly is next week, May 24, at the Hanover Manor.  Several members of the club are attending, and Charles asked that anyone else who is interested should see him.
  • “Save the Newsletter” campaign is on:  Newton Rotarians are needed to volunteer to take notes at meetings so that we can continue with a weekly newsletter.  Sign-up sheets were passed around the tables.
  • The Food Booth is going to be open this weekend, May 20 and 21, and volunteers are needed to serve one of two shifts.  Please see Jim Taylor if you can help.

Happy Dollars:
  • Carl contributed a dollar in hopes that President Charles will have such a nice tribute to all fathers on Father’s Day!
  • Denise was happy with the Farm to Table Event, which raised $2,050. For Project Self Sufficiency (which was matched so doubled to $4100!).  Because it was so well received, she is going to host a second event on September 30, and has offered to do so for Newton Rotary so long as we designate a charitable recipient.
  • John Sinclair contributed a happy dollar in celebration of Willard Klemm’s life.
  • Mark contributed “prayer dollars” for Fred Weber and John Cuozzo, both of whom have had recent health issues
  • Bud was happy for the official groundbreaking for the addition to the YMCA, which he reminded us is contingent upon us giving thousands more dollars!
  • Helen was happy to honor Steve on his birthday, and we all serenaded him with a Happy Birthday song!
  • Frank was happy for the outstanding performance of Seusical the Musical at Kittatinny, and for beating Bud in golf.
  • Barb was happy for the student interviews for the Rotary scholarship held at Kittatinny, and also for Seusical the Musical!
  • Jerry was very happy to report that his company, Sphere Construction, is the contractor for the Y.
  • Carl reported that on Monday night he transported Phyllis Carstens to the hospital with a massive brain hemorrhage, and he asked that we keep her in prayer.
  • John was glad to have Charles back in the fold and leading the meeting today!
  • Jan gave two happy dollars in honor of HQW and Sphere Construction having contracts with the Y!

History Moment:  Bob reported that Newton Rotary Club’s history dates back to May 15, 1923, and so we are a few days into our 95th year!  In honor of that anniversary, he brought to the meeting today the gavel that was used back in 1923, and Charles is using it to open and close the meeting.

Guest Speaker:  Frank introduced Dan Rose, a retired English teacher who lives in Roxbury.  He spoke about the life of Andrew Carnegie, how he amassed his wealth, and the highlights of his accomplishments and philanthropy both in Scotland and the U.S.

50/50:  Jan was AGAIN the recipient of the 50/50, but as with last week, she left the big bucks for next week.
