Last week:  Todd Lattig opened with a prayer and the Club sang “America”.  We welcomed our guest, Kurt Walton from Pass it Along, and welcomed back Pam Lazzaro.
Announcements:
  • Todd Lattig announced that the tree planting will likely take place in Memory Park
  • Jim Taylor announced that we will open the Food Booth for an event the weekend of May 19th & 20th.  The hours will be 8AM-2 PM Saturday and a few hours on Sunday morning. Sign-up sheets will be out next week.
  • Frank Eberhart asked for volunteers to help with the new branding campaign.  Please see Frank or Bob Shankman if you are interested in assisting with Public Relations, producing a brochure for the club, or recruitment.
  • We still need a site for the Garden Party.  Please consider volunteering!
  • The Scholarship Program will held on June 6th at Bristol Glen.
  • George Kaiser reviewed the history of the Newton Rotary Scholarship program and estimates that the Club has provided $146,000 in scholarship assistance lifetime-to-date.
Happy $:
  • Laura Camp is happy that her oldest grandson, who is in the army, is leaving South Korea and heading to his next posting in New York.
  • Pam Lazzaro thanked members for all the kind notes and help she received while ill.
  • Bill Kehoe is happy for the NY Yankees.
  • Jim Konzel is happy that despite the fact that his daughter boke her arm, all three kids are still running road races.
  • John Cuozzo is happy to see Pam back, and also happy for the release of three prisoners from North Korea.
  • Denise Current received a nice note from Norma Cappola, praising the addition of pictures to the newsletter.
  • A card is circulating for Tom Lynch.
  • Steve Wescott was away last week and so did not pay a $ for his 65th Birthday.  We all sang “Happy Birthday”
  • Carolyn Ottenbreit is happy for her daughter Maggie, who continues to enjoy her student exchange to South Africa.
Program:  Nancy Woods from the Newton Chamber of Commerce gave us an update on their activities.  The Newton Chamber is independent of the County Chamber so that the organization can focus exclusively on the needs of Newton. In addition to responding to inquiries form tourists and business owners, the group provides the wreaths at Christmas and flower baskets in the summer that decorate Spring Street.  The group has successfully sponsored events such as the Taste of Newton, bridal fairs, and organizes ribbon cuttings for new businesses.
