HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A tribute to Jerry Nechamkin

Next Week, Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Matt announced the meeting will be held at the Romano Center, Newton Medical Center.  Lunch is complimentary provided by the Medical Center in appreciation for Newton Rotary's long time commitment to the Newton Hospital/Newton Medical Center.

Last Week, Wednesday, January 3, 2018
A splendid start it was!  Pres. Elect Bill struck the fabled podium and the first meeting of 2018 was launched into history.  The beauty of prayer was made eloquent by Jon Sinclair.  The dulcet tones of song resonated led by Steve Wescott (dulcet and tones might just be a pairing of an adjective and noun joined together in holy hyperbole).

The program for this date was a scheduled in-service which was deferred until the February in-service at which time club committees will be reviewed, committee rosters renewed and/or updated and committee leadership determined.

Denise planned to read a letter from former exchange student Margaux Poullard.  Denise's granddaughter, Carissa, performed the role, though, when Denise realized she neglected to bring her glasses with her.  Denise also presented a check for $50 from Trash to Treasures to Pres. Elect Bill.

Carl Lazzaro presented the slate of officers for 2018 – 2019.
Pres. –  Bill Kehoe
Pres. Elect –  Carolyn Ottenbreit
Secy. – Pam Lazzaro
Treas. – Helen Wescott
Board Members – Jim Taylor, Mike Hanifan, Chris Wolverton

Guests
  • Carissa Current
  • Jerry Scanlon
  • Ron Lattig – whom everyone at the table thought was already a member.  The table determined in order to rectify this faux pas, Ron will be introduced twice upon his next visit.
  • Jim Taylor offered a warm welcome on a brisk day.
 Announcements
The Third Annual Dart Tournament is scheduled for January 14.  Newton is still looking for its first title.  The Club's daring, dauntless, darting warriors are in secret, intense training for the event.  Any club member with a semblance of eye/hand coordination is welcome to join the WIT (Warriors in Training).  GO NEWTON!

The Gift of Life drawing is set for January 12.  Anyone who wishes to purchase or sell tickets, please contact Jim Porter.

The Pancake Breakfast is set for March 3.  Ticket money can be given to Carolyn.

The Chili Open is scheduled for January 27.  A few additional volunteers are needed.

The Gift of Life Volleyball Tournament is tentatively set for March 30 – Chris Wolverton, Chair.

Happy Dollars
  • Cory Stoner – happy that he was in Phoenix (75 degrees) to see Penn State win the Fiesta Bowl.  He was also happy to see Denise Current at the airport awaiting him for his return to Sussex County (8 degrees).
  • Denise Current – happy for the many correspondences during the Christmas holidays from our international students.
  • Jim Taylor – sadly reported that mighty Clemson LOST!
  • Carolyn Ottenbreit – happy that her daughter ran the Central Park 5K on New Year's Eve.  Carolyn also reported that for many the run is not a 5K but consists of viewing the fireworks and then a very quick run home.

Divots and Duffers
Matt & Charles shared with the Club that they will be assuming the roles of co-chair for this year's Golf Outing – the 51st.  With the retirement of decades long committee members, Bob, George, Pam et.al., the “driver” has been passed on to Matt and Charles!

Note – Snowbirds
Newton Rotarian snowbirds migrating south are George Kaiser, Florida; Barbara Miller, Florida; Frank Eberhart, North Carolina.  April showers bring May flowers as well as our snowbirds back home.

Service Above Self
A special thanks to Nancy, Matt, Carolyn, Helen, and Chris who helped this scribe remember to jot things down when his attention drifted from the task at hand and who served as hearing aids for the scribe (without them this would have been one truncated newsletter).  It takes a community to raise a Newtarian.

 50/50
The shifty Ace of Spades lives for yet another day as there was no 50/50 drawing on this date.
