April 18, 2018 - Rotary Club Meeting Minutes:  Linda McConville

John Roberts opened the meeting to 28 Newton Rotarians and 5 guests.

Announcements:  Pam Lazzaro is having back surgery soon.  Please keep her in your prayers.  Chris Wolverton did a great job with this year’s Volleyball Tournament – great turnout and tons of fun was enjoyed at this fundraiser.  Denise Current attended the Mendham Rotary’s Antiques and Flowers Show.  Denise recommended that our Club consider having a similar event, perhaps an Antiques and Art Show fundraiser.

Denise requested assistance food shopping for the homeless; Linda McConville will help Denise with the shopping.

New Committee – Branding and Marketing Committee:  Bob Shankman agreed to chair the committee for 1 year.  John and Frank agreed to assist but they are looking for more volunteers.  See Bob if you would like to help out on this important committee.

Guests:   Our guests included Brian, Barry, Kurt, Liza and Megan.  Mmm, I believe we have a few potential Newton Rotarians in that group!

Happy $:  Bob and Kathy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!  Congratulations to you both!  Dawn shared some humorous moments shared at the Volley Ball Tournament.  Bob gave a happy $ for the Wildcats.  Liza is happy that her son Wyatt donated food to food services from his own money.  John was happy to attend the jazz festival held at the Sparta High School and is impressed with the level of talent we have here in Sussex County.  Kurt is thankful for the Rotary sponsorship of the scholar athletes.  Matt is happy that the new Golf Committee is up and running with good participation from several club members.

Picture Fines:  Mark was fined for several photos.

Program:  Rod Seifert, President-Elect of the Rockaway Rotary Club gave a great presentation on the use of technology to promote the club.  Rod reviewed the Rockaway Club’s use of their website, Facebook, newspaper articles and magazines as well as their new club brochure.

We were delighted that George Kaiser made the club shine when Rod asked how we process the scholarship information as George has that information on the club website.  Thank you George.

Surprise!:  The Club surprised Linda McConville with a cake to celebrate her retirement as the CEO of SCARC Guardianship Services … this writer can report Linda was very grateful and speechless!  Perhaps she will make up for that next week!

John closed the meeting at 1:30 PM.

Dolly Parton I’m happy to announce that she is one of us….  a …..  ROTARIAN.

She came from a poor rural Tennessee family of 12 children.

Cognizant  of the fact that she and her siblings did not have any books in the house, while growing up, she started the Imagination Library in 1995.

It is now partnered with ROTARY. It’s purpose is to support basic education by fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning from an early age.

The Partnership works by providing a free hardcover book every month from birth to age five. The children receive age appropriate reading materials that will help them establish a strong educational foundation for life.
